What “1 avril au 1 décembre” means on a Montréal parking sign

Updated October 2, 2026

The date range on a Montréal sign tells you when a rule applies — and a very common one is street maintenance. In most boroughs, the city restricts parking on set days and hours between April 1 and December 1 so crews can sweep, repair and inspect.

What the sign is telling you

A plate like 9H–12H MAR 1 AVRIL AU 1 DÉC reads as: no parking on Tuesdays from 9 to noon, but only between April 1 and December 1. Outside those dates that plate doesn’t apply.

Why it exists

The city uses these windows for street sweeping, non-urgent road work, tree inspection and storm-drain cleaning. The ban holds for the whole posted period, rain or shine.

Check your borough

The exact periods vary by borough. The city publishes the schedule for each one; the posted sign is what counts on the day.

Winter is separate

Snow removal is a different system, with its own notices from the city. Don’t read “no sign” in winter as permission.

Quick answers

Does 1 avril au 1 décembre mean parking is banned all that time?

No. It means the plate’s rule applies during that season, on the days and hours the plate lists. The rest of the time that plate has no effect.
