No Standing vs No Parking vs No Stopping in NYC

Updated October 2, 2026

These three signs are the most misread in New York. All three say you can’t leave your car, but they differ in what you may still do for a moment — and that difference is exactly what traffic agents write tickets about.

The short answer

SignDrop off / pick up passengersLoad / unload goodsWait or leave the car
No ParkingYesYes, while actively loadingNo
No StandingYesNoNo
No StoppingNoNoNo

Think of it as three levels of strictness: No Parking is the loosest, No Stopping the strictest. A passenger drop-off has to be quick — the rules say “expeditiously” — it isn’t a place to wait for someone.

Read the whole pole, not just the top plate

A sign almost always carries days and hours — for example NO STANDING 7AM–7PM MON–FRI. Outside those hours that plate doesn’t apply, but another plate on the same pole might. Arrows say which direction from the pole the rule runs. Where two plates conflict at the moment you arrive, the stricter one wins.

How CurbParker shows it

CurbParker decodes each plate, applies the stricter rule for the time you’re checking, and colours the curb accordingly. A No Parking segment turns red, but tapping it shows what the sign says, so you can see whether a quick passenger stop is allowed.
