Street parking in New York City, decoded
Updated October 2, 2026
New York has hundreds of thousands of parking signs, often stacked three or four to a pole. CurbParker reads them for you and paints each curb by what is legal at the day and time you choose: green you can park, amber it is legal but a restriction starts soon, red you can’t.
The rules people get wrong
- “No Standing” is not “No Parking”. They allow different things. See the three-sign comparison.
- Fire hydrants have no sign. The rule is 15 feet to each side, every hour of every day. How to measure it.
- Alternate side parking only restricts the posted window, but it restricts all of it. How it works.
What CurbParker covers in New York
Every NYC DOT parking-regulation sign in the city’s open data, ParkNYC meter blocks with their tiered rates, and the city’s hydrant locations — all stored on your phone after one download, so it works underground and in dead zones. Choose a time, or a “park until” time, and the whole map recalculates for your stay.
